The inspiration behind K Villa stems from the desire to break free from the pressures of everyday life and establish a deeper connection with nature. Kubota believes that these pressures cause our hearts to close off and stagnate, draining our energy to live. To counteract this, K Villa serves as a medium that induces a response and fosters a relationship between the inhabitants and their surroundings.
What sets K Villa apart is its refined two-dimensional surfaces that compose the architecture. The floors, walls, and roofs are kept as separate components, creating a space with ambiguous divisions where all areas converge into a loosely connected architecture. This overlapping and shifting of abstract slabs gives the illusion of floating, erasing the boundaries between the planar and the steric, inside and outside. The result is a fusion of the mind with nature, leading to boundless freedom and essential richness.
Constructed using reinforced concrete, K Villa stands as a testament to the designer's technical prowess. The thin pillars, measuring only 90Φ, support the roof, challenging the limits of earthquake-prone Japan. The use of stainless steel mirrors on some slabs reflects and expands the surrounding nature, blurring the line between the built environment and the natural world.
Located in Nasu, Tochigi, Japan, the design of K Villa took place from 2015 to 2019, with construction occurring from 2019 to 2020. Despite the challenges posed by the distance between the office and the site, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kubota and his team successfully brought their vision to life.
K Villa has garnered recognition for its ingenuity and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
With its minimalist aesthetic, innovative design, and harmonious integration with nature, K Villa stands as a testament to Katsufumi Kubota's vision and talent. It serves as an inspiration for architects and designers alike, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of architecture.
